Excerpt: The question of religion is literally as old as the hills. Still, this question behind all questions surrounds us as inescapably as the weather. For religion is the very atmosphere in which we live and move and have our being. Many well-meaning people are pleading these days for putting the fourth R back into public education, alongside of the old stand-bys, Readin’, ‘Ritin’, and ‘Rithmetic.’ The cry goes up: They have taken away my Lord out of the schools, and I know not where they have laid him! Enact legislation to get Religion (prayer and Bible reading) back into the curriculum. Many bewail our commercialized Yuletide and preach the gospel: Put Christ back into Christmas! Let’s make it a religious holiday. You often hear “people who think young” declare: Religion is not for me. Religion is for aged people (as a substitute for robust living) and for old fogies (who insist on playing ostrich) and for little children (who don’t know better). Maybe I’ll take up religion when the time comes. Wherever you turn, it’s the same story. Don’t drag religion into the lecture hall. Keep religion out of politics. Labor organizations are religiously neutral. Business and religion don’t mix.
